Blurb:

Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he'll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:

Break into the notorious Ice Court(a military stronghold that has never been breached)

Retrieve a hostage(who could unleash magical havoc on the world)

Survive long enough to collect his reward(and spend it)

Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done - and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable - if they don't kill each other first.

My Review:

Favorite Quotes:

What could be better than revenge? “There’s nothing else I want.” “I can make you a drüskelle again.”
“Are you a magician, then? A wej sprite who grants wishes? I’m superstitious, not stupid.”
“You can be both, you know, but that’s hardly the point.”

He wasn’t much younger than Kaz, but somehow he looked like a child—smooth-skinned, wide-eyed, like a silk-eared puppy in a room full of fighting dogs.

“Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost.” Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias’ ghost to kick your ghost’s ass.” “My ghost won’t associate with your ghost,” Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.

“You okay?” Inej asked, and Kaz felt himself drawn toward her voice like water rolling downhill.

“The life you live, the hate you feel—it’s poison. I can drink it no longer.”

Okay I don’t know if I’m ready for this convo guys.

Kaz was broody, secretive and a flipping genius! While he kept to himself and held his emotions very close to his chest, there was no denying his commitment to his crew and it showed in the loyalty he commanded from them. Even the newbies were so taken with him they went against their better judgement to do his bidding. And it generally paid off.

I can say that his secrets got a bit annoying the deeper we got into the story, if he would have given just a little bit more of himself about 2/3 in, it would have given him the growth we all wanted to see. But I understood his struggle with allowing himself to be vulnerable, even to people who he trusted with his life.

Inej, oh Inej, you are a girl after my own heart. Silent and deadly, scared and emotionally closed off. A perfect blend for someone who has no purpose in life….yet.  These characters, while being in their late teens, had a sense of maturity around them that can only be accomplished through living on the streets.  It wasn’t too much, even though I had to constantly remind myself they were only about 17-18 and some even younger than that.  But that’s what happens in a war torn world, you grow up fast or not at all.  Only the strong survive and all that jazz.  I could go on about each and every character but this review would get REALLY long.

Suffice it to say that all the characters had complex and intense back story’s that were intertwined so deeply into the story I’m not sure you could have packed any more into them without losing something.  Just…go read it.

In short, I loved this book.

This book satisfies a spot on my #SFvFBingo reading challenge. I’m gonna put it on the Dystopian spot.
