Serena Smith is unusual.
Growing up in a backwoods village, her life is lonely and dull. Then, on her eighteenth birthday, she's gifted a magical heirloom only to be snatched by fae and condemned to a lifetime in chains.
Dragged to Aldar, a fae kingdom ruled by a tyrant witch, Serena discovers a forbidden love, and meets fellow outcasts, each with their own dark secrets.
As the lives of warriors, rebels, and witches clash, they find a shared destiny. For only together, and with Serena's unique gifts, can they survive long enough to build the flames of a revolution. Only together can they go to war ...

At first it started out slow but then I couldn’t get enough of it and I can’t wait for the next one to come out. The title called to me and the beautiful cover sold me almost immediately after seeing it. I tend to NOT read blurbs if I can help it. I like to choose a book based on how it makes me feel at first glance. Now don’t get me wrong, a lot of times I will go past the viseral reaction and read the blurb to get a better feel for a book. But I prefer not no.
I loved this story, it reminded me of a watered down Six of Crows. It was a bit all over the place and had too much going on. There quite a bit of info dump and honestly, the romance aspect seems a bit premature in the story. If the romance was postponed till later in the series I think this book could have been a lot better.
But despite all that I found I couldn’t put this book down. Each character was unique and gave something different to the story. And while the main character was Serena, my favorite is Frasier. He is just so damaged and yet has so much strength that he lends others. I love him.
I couldn’t stand Wilder personally. I felt he was all wrong for Serena. Adi was my second favorite because she suffered from sins of the mother-itis. Always trying to prove how unlike she was from her mother. I can relate. The twins were more to fill in the lacking family aspect (I think) but they each give something, although I can’t remember their names so that says something about what they contributed I suppose.
Anyway, it was fabulous and if you like YA fantasy, you need to read this book. It’s available on KU as are her other books. I’m gonna read her others because I heard the series intertwines with each other. How cool right?
