Blurb:I named myself. I took the word Animal out of their mouths, wore it like a badge of honor then shoved it down their throats. I’ve fought for what I have. I see you coming, before you even know you want a piece of me. In a city riddled with warring families, I’ll rise up between them. My people, the broken souls I gather will have power by the time I’m done with them.
I protect mine.
Him. My brother, Nix.
Her. The girl that is the only home I’ve ever had. She knows me.
I’m coming at you, Sweetness. Stay ready.
Favorite Quotes:
He was devastating. Just being near him was like getting pulled into the sun. I knew it was probably bad for us both, but my heart was set up like a clearance sale. No returns, no refunds.
T was an obstetrician of death. She was incredibly capable at delivering it.
I’m gonna start off by saying that while the story was average, the WAY it was told made it fricking amazing! She writes so beautifully that I got sucked into the story. The only thing that irked me a bit was the abrupt time jumping and the lack of details from their pasts. Everything was very mysterious and alluded to, something that I found to be both very smart but also kinda lazy. Smart because it allowed the reader to fill in the blanks and I could make it as gruesome as I wanted. Lazy because we don’t really know how they dealt with a lot of stuff and so I wasn’t able to connect on a deeper level because of it.
But other than that, and it’s really not that big of a deal because the writing was so good that I overlooked it, I loved it. The romance kinda threw me. Like, I knew they would get together but I didn’t really see the need for a romantic relationship between them. What they had almost seemed to transcend a physical relationship, if that makes sense. So them getting together seemed kinda anti-climactic to me, because I figured it was a given. The action was gruesome, fast-paced and steadily resolved. It was nice to not have to deal with a lot of dragging on when it came to that.
While this is a stand alone novel, there are side stories with the other characters that I think I may want to go back and revisit, if only to get a better understanding of all the characters in this world.

Intriguing! So glad you loved the writing!! It’s weird, b/c at first glance that blurb made me think it was non-contemporary…warring families? Or was it like mafia?? Also, you tagged it African American — now I’m even more intrigued! In what way?
Yeah the male lead is a black guy
Oops, I don’t think its contemporary, I might have typed that in by mistake.
