Excerpt:I glared at the deadly but visually stunning dragon. He was massive; he’d had to tuck his wings in at his side to have room for movement. The black and blue of his scales shone even in the dying light. The bright yellow eyes surveyed the room, before locking me in his gaze. He roared again and I decided to take a stand. In general I didn’t think much before I acted, and my plans were often considered to be brave or stupid. Usually both.
“Braxton Compass,” I scolded him, moving right up into his strike zone, my hands on my hips. “Your scaled dragon ass is blocking the doorway.”
Jacob, Tyson, and Maximus crowded behind me. They were ready to snatch me up if their brother made the wrong move. But I knew it would have to be pretty exceptional circumstances before Braxton would lose enough of himself to hurt me.
The massive beast lowered his head until we were eye to eye. He would scent trickles of my fear, but despite my body’s involuntary response, I wasn’t really afraid of Braxton. His dragon was a little unpredictable, but he was strong enough to keep both of them controlled. I knew he’d pulled this stunt to remind the council where the real power lay and that he didn’t like secrets being kept, especially when they personally affected us.
The dragon and I continued our stare-off, my dark blue eyes locked on his yellow. “Let’s call it a tie,” I finally said, grinning and raising my eyebrows at the same time.
So this book was like a double edged sword. On one side, I loved it. I found the storyline intriguing and original. The romance was a smooth, slow, almost ambigious burn. Her relationship with the four brothers was quasi-reverse harem-ish. And while I don’t usually like those, this one was making a convert of me. Cause I was digging how much they all showed their love for her. And there was no mistaking how they felt about her. It was clear from the beginning who her closest and favorite brother was though. Braxton.
Braxton is your typical alpha shifter. His closeness with Jessa bordered on obsession, which I found both creepy and attractive. I may have some issues. They have each others back so hard that at first I thought they were a legit couple. But so far it’s only a platonic friendship kind of love. And I kinda want it to stay that way because its so good I’m afraid it can’t get better with sex. (Hope I’m wrong about that. LOL)
On the other side of this sword, OMG it’s so infuriating to not know where it was going! The storyline was a bit all over the place with the conversations changing direction mid-thought. Lots more questions than answers. And there started to be too many love interests so I got confused.
The introduction of the twin sister really shot my eyebrows into my hairline. Because I thought it was gonna be instant competition and hate, so glad I was wrong about that. I did wish we had more interaction between Jessa and her sister because I felt way more connected to Jessa by the end. I hope to get more from them together in the next book. Which I will be reading.
