Blurb:

If one touch can infect. . .

All Ruby Behl wants for her seventeenth birthday is a good career path match, and to kiss her best friend and long time crush, Wesley Fairchild. Unfortunately, the simplicity of teenage wishes evaporated a decade ago when the Tercera virus nearly wiped out the human race. Transmitted through touch, the slightest contact is prohibited in the safe haven community of Port Gibson.

Then a kiss is deadly. . .

An innocent game of Spin the Bottle, a rite of passage for Port Gibson’s teens, provides the opportunity Ruby’s been waiting for, but when Wesley winds up Marked, Ruby realizes her first kiss may also be her last. Ruby races the viral clock to uncover long buried secrets about her dead parents, and her once cloudy future becomes clear. She’s the key to finding the cure, but is she willing to pay the price?

My Review:

One of my favorite things about dystopians is the evolution of the MC’s growth.  These genre of books have so many layers of growth in them and if done right, just gives it that something extra.  This is the reason dystopian is one of my favorite genre’s.

This book brought me back in time to when I was younger.  I enjoyed the entire thing, even if there where a few iffy spots with the traveling.  Some of it was a bit linear.  The pacing was consistent except a bit in the beginning with the world building and the quickness of the attacks, but things moved a bit fast after that.  The world building wasn’t too complex but had enough description to give the story a rich backdrop for their journey.

I’m not a huge fan of love triangle’s but it kinda comes with the territory in this genre. A lot happens along their journey in this book.  Some things seemed a bit fluffy and I felt took away from the main plot but even with that, the story held my attention.  Ruby grew so much in this book, and I liked how she questioned herself throughout it.  The slow burn of the romance was par for the course in this genre.

I remember wanting to read the next one right away but for some reason I didn’t. Now that I’m reviewing it, I’m gonna check if it’s available on KU…..and it is!  Woo hoo! I already clicked it.  And now I’m on to see what happens next in this series.
