My rating:
Blurb:We’ve all heard the story of the Four Horsemen. Harbingers of the apocalypse. Destruction given form. Four of the sexiest—wait no—forget that. You get my point.
So imagine my surprise when I find out everything I’ve ever been told, is a lie.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Let’s start from the beginning.
My name is Ruby Morningstar. I run a tattoo parlor in Portland with my bestfriend, have a pet raccoon, a crazy ex that stalks me, not to mention this one little thing… I’m a demon. Half-succubus, to be exact. For the last twenty-three years of my life, that’s the story I believed, but on the day a handsome stranger bails me out of jail my world is turned upside down, and suddenly I don’t know who I am anymore.
Because the Four Horsemen aren’t the bringers of the apocalypse.
I am.
Talk about never catching a break.
3.5 stars — Dudes, this cover is one of the major reasons why I wanted to give this book a try. It truly is amazeballs. And the blurb is hella intriguing too!! I haven’t read a lot of reverse harems, and so why not start with the four horsemen of the apocalypse? 😉 And it was good, it just didn’t blow me away. Part of that is that it’s pretty short, and while I was intrigued by where the plot was going, I apparently wasn’t intrigued enough to want to continue. And because it was shorter, it was a lot of introduction, and not a lot of connection for me.
Ruby was hella snarky, and I thoroughly enjoyed that. I thought the moral conundrums she faced made for some depth to her character, and was definitely unexpected and appreciated. I will admit the bits we learn about her past in the end caught me by surprise. I wouldn’t have minded if the foreshadowing had been a bit more obvious or something…but maybe that was just me and I was reading distracted.
As for the four horsemen? I didn’t really feel like I had enough time to get to know them that well…I wasn’t really attached to any of them. I thought they were intriguing, for sure, and it was an interesting concept…but I just… I don’t know. Maybe it was just me. But not only did *I* not connect with them, I also didn’t see much of a connection between any of them with Ruby. Sure, attraction for sure, but what beyond that? It might come in the next books, but I needed more in this book for me to be invested.
I was also not a huge fan of Moira…I don’t know why, but I felt reservations about her. Bandit on the other hand was spectacular.
And since I don’t read a lot of paranormal, I felt like while the world was intriguing, I was a bit lost with it all. So many creatures, and not all of the names familiar.
So I think the theme for me was a lack of connection. I did connect and enjoy Ruby, but that was about it. I’m sure it’ll be a hit for others, it just didn’t have enough of what I was looking for for me to check out the rest.
COYER Summer Hunt: Read a book with a traditionally evil character as main character. (ex. murderer, devil) — 4 points.
Great review. Looks interesting. Think it would be a good ‘light’ read for me.
Thanks! I hope you enjoy it if you check it out!
Oh yes, this book is for me. I loved the cover and the title as well. I’ll check this one out.
I really hope it works for you! It feels like it should, but it’s always hard to tell, you know?
