Blurb:

No one can save her.

In order to protect Prince Lucien d’Malvane’s heart, Zera had to betray him. Now, he hates the sight of her. Trapped in Cavanos as a prisoner of the king, she awaits the inevitable moment her witch severs their magical connection and finally ends her life.

But fate isn't ready to give her up just yet.

With freedom coming from the most unlikely of sources, Zera is given a second chance at life as a Heartless. But it comes with a terrible price. As the king mobilizes his army to march against the witches, Zera must tame an elusive and deadly valkerax trapped in the tunnels underneath the city if she wants to regain her humanity.

Winning over a bloodthirsty valkerax? Hard. Winning back her friends before war breaks out? A little harder.

But a Heartless winning back Prince Lucien’s heart?

The hardest thing she’s ever done.

My Review:

4.5 stars — I did NOT anticipate where this story was going to go!  I was surprised right from the start.

I will admit that I was a bit bummed that Zera spent the ENTIRE story letting her hunger get her to believe in her own worthlessness.  It was so hard to see her just stubbornly hold on to those beliefs, and thus completely misinterpret so many actions by others.  It’s not that I don’t get it…she’s lived 3 years with the hunger, its hold is STRONG.  But it still made my heart ache and made me frustrated with her at the same time.  I love that the goodness of Zera comes out over and over again — she can’t help but be good and show caring towards her friends, even when she’s trying to push them away.

I loved meeting Yorl and Ev, and found that whole part of the story to be both confusing and fascinating.  They were both really complicated characters in some ways, but Zera proves yet again how she can form friendships in the strangest circumstances.  I wonder if they’ll be in book 3 — I kinda hope so.

Similarly, I really enjoyed the bits we saw of Lady Tarroux.  Again, their relationship just showcased what an interesting person Zera is in some ways.

Varia both surprised me and didn’t.  She’s a very complicated character herself.  It’s not black and white, and there’s SO MUCH going on, and I feel like we only know the tip of the iceberg.

The ending was crazy.  And heartbreaking.  And crazy.  I need Zera to have grown as we go into the next book though…I’m going to be hella disappointed if she goes back to the same old same old.

This one had some slower moments at the beginning, but I loved the different elements of the world we got to learn about.  I cannot wait to see how the series is going to end!
