Blurb:“No secret stays hidden forever.”
Still grieving from their loss in the far East, Giovanni Vecchio and Beatrice De Novo discover that for them, all roads really do lead to Rome. But nothing is quite as it seems in the Eternal City. Joined by Carwyn and Tenzin, unexpected clashes greet them almost immediately, and rivalries churn beneath the glittering facade of the old Roman court. They quickly realize that allies might be enemies, and ancient rivals could hold the key to a deadly secret.
Giovanni and Beatrice will be forced to call on old alliances, ancient power, and fierce cunning to survive for the eternity they both desire. Sometimes, finding the end means going back to the beginning. Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water finally meet with devastating results in the conclusion of the Elemental Mysteries.
4.5 stars — Fantastic finale! Even in the reading slump I am in, I was still sucked in by the story. It was a bit slower for me to start, but once they got to Rome I was hooked.
The thing with final books in a series is, the best ones actually answer all the questions you have accumulated. And I *think* this one got all of mine. I mean, my brain is a little everywhere, but I ended it feeling very satisfied with B and Gio’s story. Sure, I want to know more about Carwyn and Tenzin and Ben…and and and. But the conclusion for B and Gio gave me what I was looking for.
I had some theories, and it was fun to be completely wrong for once…especially since the explanations made total sense. I didn’t see some parts coming at all. I enjoyed the mystery about why the elixir wasn’t good, and appreciated that the 5th element the monk spoke of was explained well enough for me to understand. I’m a reader that really loves clear explanations, so I was glad not to be confused.
B and Gio were much more solid in this one…I didn’t feel the need to smack either one of them which was seriously refreshing.
I loved the little bits of Ben’s POV that we got. It was sometimes used to help explain some things to the reader without it seeming like it, but we also just got to see a teensy bit of a different perspective of what was going on…from the human end of things.
And now I need to investigate the spinoffs. A great series does that, you know?
COYER Community: I buddy read this book with Brandee, and she gave it 5 stars (her review). Loved having someone to read this whole series with, especially since we both loved it!
Great review, Lenore! I didn’t think about getting Ben’s POV serving as an explanation without seeming to do so. Good point. As you know, I adored this finale and series. So I, too, will be moving on to the spinoffs. I’d be happy to buddy read. 😉 And thanks for cross-posting. I didn’t think to do that – I should go back and add. 🙂
Oh dude, I definitely would love to buddy read! If I can get my reading mode back on, that is. I think I’m getting close to snapping out of it, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up. (though I did finally have my first 5 star read of 2022, so that’s a good sign right?)
