My rating:
Blurb:Thea Landry has always known her place in modern-day society. It’s somewhere just above the trash can her mother dumped her in as a newborn but below the class where much comes easy. With her tattered shoes and bargain-bin clothes, her life has never been full of glamour.
So when a rich and charismatic man takes interest, she doesn’t fool herself into thinking their encounter is anything more than a one-night stand. Months later, she’s kicking herself for not getting his phone number. Or his last name. She’s given up hope of seeing him ever again.
Until one day, years later, Logan Kendrick waltzes into her life once more and turns everything she’s built upside down. This time around, she won’t make the same mistake. She’s going to fight to keep him in her life—not for herself.
But for their daughter.
4 stars — I love it when characters are inherently good, they just need a little more growth along the way.
The narrators were solid. I’ve enjoyed Ms. Mitchell before, and did in this one as well. She had a great voice for Charlie, really expressed her mix of exuberance, petulance, and shyness…basically I was impressed. Her voices in general were distinct and consistent, and she had great emotions and pacing. I’m not sure, but this may be my first listen to Mr. Shedlock. He had great voices, emotions and pacing. Occasionally something about his cadence didn’t work as well for me, but it wasn’t a turn off — just preventing him from being a fave.
The main characters were pretty easy to love, even though they frustrated me to quite a large degree at times. I kind of loved the set up of their relationship and finding one another again, because it wasn’t mired by the usual flaws in this trope. Thea truly did try to find Logan, and wanted Charlie to know her father. And Logan didn’t blame Thea or make irrational demands on her, he truly just tried to figure out his place, and was enthralled with Charlie.
Thea was strong, compassionate, empathetic…but also immensely guarded. Thankfully, she truly did have a reason for being so guarded, and I felt like she grew at a reasonable pace in that department. It was weird, b/c while I kind of agreed with her positions on how the future should look, it was also hard to watch her not give Logan the chance to do the right thing. Thankfully it all worked out in the end.
Logan was pretty adorable in some ways, especially the way he tried to develop his relationship with Charlie. I appreciated that that wasn’t smooth sailing, it felt more realistic. But he was also kind of hard headed, and definitely a workaholic. In the end, he was a product of his upbringing — he’s never met a challenge he couldn’t throw money at, and he was used to getting his way. It took him way too long to see things from Thea’s perspective for my taste (hence 4 stars and not 4.5), but he did eventually get there.
Thea and Logan had some pretty smoking chemistry too, you could feel their connection from the start.
There were some great secondary characters, and it was interesting because so many of them were multi-dimensional — you could see the good things in them, but also the things they needed to work on. It’s a good set up for some future books, and it just makes those characters more real. And obviously Charlie stole the show without being a perfect child — something I appreciate.
The teeny tiny bit of suspense threw me off…I don’t feel like it was necessary to the story. Either make it a bigger part, or eliminate it IMO.
So yeah, I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in this series, it was a solid first book!
COYER Community: I buddy read this book with Brandee, even though it was a reread for her, and she gave it 4 stars as well (her review).
Yay! I loved this one, too. This series is so good. You’re going to love the rest of the books too.
