Blurb:What's the worst thing that can happen to a werewolf? Unable to shift for three months, Mateo Cruz knows all too well. His wolf has taken up residence in his head, taunting him night and day with vividly violent and carnal thoughts. Convinced he's cursed, he needs the help of a powerful witch before he literally goes insane.
Evie Savoie has always obeyed the house rules of her coven--no werewolves. They're known for being moody and volatile. So, when a distempered, dangerous werewolf strolls into the bar and almost strangles one of her late-night customers, she's ready to bounce him through the door. But the desperation in his eyes when he begs her to help him softens her heart and convinces her to bend the rules.
What Evie doesn't know is that Mateo's wolf has a mind of his own. And now that she's in his sights, he wants only one thing. Her.
4.5 stars — Well that was a whole heck of a lot of fun and goodness!! Lots of great chemistry, a super fun world, great supporting cast, and an adorable couple to root for!
Evie was absolutely adorable. I loved her absolute verve for life, how easily she showed her love and excitement for things. Her obsession with comics and Star Wars and other pop culture things was just fun and loveable. It was a perfect balance for her more vulnerable and insecure side, and I appreciated that it didn’t take over her entire life…it was pretty dialed into specific things. And we really got to see her grow and tackle those insecurities and find her brave side throughout the story.
Mateo was such a strange mix, b/c he has this Alpha side (literally) that is more a part of him than he realizes…but he’s also very gentle and loyal and thoughtful and sweet. For the most part it blended very well for me. Seeing him fighting his instincts could be hard, but I appreciated that he didn’t dismiss everything he was learning as time went on.
Honestly, I adored them together. Sure, they struggled just because of their natures, and being uncertain about what they were each looking for…but I think that made for a very natural relationship progression. And wow, chemistry out the wazoo!!
The world was absolutely fantastic. Both from a world building perspective — there were a few old things, a few new things, a few things still a mystery, blending together well. And we weren’t hit with too much information overload, so there’s still plenty to learn in the series.
And the other aspect of the fantastic world were the secondary characters! I particularly adored all the crazy and unique sisters, and how they worked together but also felt like realistic family.
I will say that I didn’t quite guess the bad guy in this one…my suspicion was on someone else until closer to the reveal, so that was fun for me.
I can’t wait to read more in this series…what a great start!
I love this cover and I’m glad to hear you really enjoyed the book.
