Blurb:Newcago is free. They told David it was impossible, that even the Reckoners had never killed a High Epic. Yet Steelheart - invincible, immortal, unconquerable - is dead. And he died by David's hand.
Eliminating Steelheart was supposed to make life simpler. Instead, it only made David realize he has questions. Big ones. And no one in Newcago can give him answers.
Babylon Restored, the city formerly known as the borough of Manhattan, has possibilities, though. Ruled by the mysterious High Epic Regalia, Babylon Restored is flooded and miserable, but David is sure it's the path that will lead him to what he needs to find. Entering a city oppressed by a High Epic despot is risky, but David's willing to take the gamble. Because killing Steelheart left a hole in David's heart. A hole where his thirst for vengeance once lived. Somehow, he filled that hole with another Epic - Firefight. And now he will go on a quest darker and even more dangerous than the fight against Steelheart to find her, and to get his answers.
4.5 stars — Wow! I’m just getting more and more sucked into the world, and it kept me engrossed the whole time.
Yet again, Brett and I had so many wild theories, some early, some late, some I wavered on when Brett stood strong. I loved picking out little clues here and there, and then having them be confirmed. There were definitely elements we’d discussed after book 1 that went in a different direction, but nothing ever felt wild or out of character…more like we were just throwing crazy ideas to the sky and seeing what stuck.
David is definitely a fun hero to follow. I mean, don’t get me wrong, he’s UNBEARABLY naïve, but it fits with how young he is, both in age and experience. He really is like a puppy that you can’t help but love. And the thing is, in some ways his innocence is what gives him an edge — it’s what keeps him hoping, and keeps him searching for answers when everyone else has become jaded and just accepted what they think they know. I LOVED seeing him try to ferret out answers, how he just wouldn’t give up on people (even when I had). I knew he was going to take a hit in this book, but I think in the end his persistence and belief in people will pay off in the end.
There were so many new characters in this one, both good and bad. Some definitely more developed than others, but I think they all added their own flavour. I can’t help but miss a few of the characters from book 1, and I hope we get a mish mash of them all in the finale.
MacLeod Andrews was still solid narrating this sequel, and I actually think his performance was even better — I didn’t notice the pauses as much at least.
So yeah. I can’t wait to see how it’s going to wrap up, it’s been a great series that delves into the shades of gray surrounding good and evil.
