3.5 stars — Well huh. So, I still really enjoyed myself and was sucked into finishing this one, and still had a great time speculating about theories with my hubby while we listened. But the thing is…we got to the end, and I was a bit let down. There were quite a few gaps that were never filled, or answers that were kind of lackluster. I was expecting a nice wrap up, where so many things came into play in the finale…and I got some of that, but not nearly enough unfortunately.
I loved seeing David in charge in this one, and I really appreciated how he struggled with that new role, even as he did an admirable job. Not perfect, but he did lean on the crew as much as he could. I appreciated that part of his struggles were with regards to wanting to still be the point man. I would have enjoyed even more of that.
There were other elements of David’s story that I was less impressed with. There were definitely moments where I felt like he should be talking to people, and he just never really did. I was super disappointed in that. And I was kind of disappointed in one little twist, b/c it never got explored, and I kind of needed more if his story was going to go in that direction.
It was so nice to see Cody and Abraham again, this time adding Mizzy into the mix. I wouldn’t have minded more of Mizzy actually, and strangely we got more Abe, but that just left me with more questions. I will admit that I was disappointed in Tia’s storyline. I did love the addition of Nighthawk, definitely not something I was expecting and it brought about some interesting questions/thoughts.
I did love having David and Megan together in this one, and I appreciated that we got to see them have some moments (though I can always use more).
I did enjoy the expansion of Megan’s powers, but truthfully? I was expecting (and probably needing) more. So many unanswered questions regarding all of that.
And that brings me full circle: so many loose threads. I really feel like more was needed. At least another book, probably a lot more to do it justice. I did love some of the twists at the end though, one in particular had me bawling.
Seriously though, wtf with Calamity? WTF.
So yeah. Bummed, but it won’t keep me from trying more Sanderson in the future.
