It was supposed to be a seamless robbery. In and out without a trace.
But then Police Chief Marks walked through the door…

Stealing is all Leah knows. She’s good at what she does—she was trained to be the best—but that all changes when she’s caught red-handed by a cop. Cuffed in the back of a police car, she soon realizes her screw-up means she’ll pay a heavy price…

Kellan has to tread carefully with the teenage girl he caught robbing his parents’ house. Not just because she’s a minor and she’s terrified, but because she is a painful reminder of the daughter he lost. He’s determined to help her, but he’s going to need backup in the form of one very attractive social worker…

Melina jumps at any chance she can to work with Kellan. The man’s a locked box she’s been trying to break open for years. Haunted by the disappearance of his own daughter, Melina thinks this case might be exactly what Kellan needs to deal with the demons of his past…

But nothing goes according to plan. When the station is attacked and someone breaks Leah out of jail, Kellan and Melina realize there’s much more to this girl than meets the eye.

Suddenly, Kellan is right back where he started, hunting for a lost child.
Will he find this one in time, or is it too late to rescue her?

My Review:

4.5 stars — This was most definitely my favourite story in the Aspen Falls series!  I LOVED it!

The strength of this story lies in the individual stories of Leah and Kellan, and how they slowly converge.  The romance was lovely, don’t get me wrong, but that’s not what kept me coming back to this story and wanting to hear more.  It was the plot, and my connection to those two characters and what they were going through.

Melina was a total sweetheart, and while I didn’t feel we got as much time with her, I loved what I saw and how she supported Kellan.  She seemed super sweet, caring, perfect for her role as a social worker.  You could truly tell how much her work meant to her, and how seriously she took it.  I loved her sweet crush on Kellan, and his accompanying crush on her, and I cheered when they finally crossed that line into more territory.  They really fit so well with one another.  They had great chemistry, and their romance gave me butterflies.

Leah’s story was both crazy and not.  I felt for her as she walked that line between what she’d been told growing up with Robin, and what she was starting to observe about the outside world.  How hard must it be to have your belief system shaken and have to figure out what was *truly* right and what was wrong?  Sometimes I was a bit skeptical about her not recognizing/remembering things from when she was taken, but I forget that I remember nothing from when I was 4.  Truly.  I was enthralled with her story, and loved watching her face down her demons and try to get to what was real…especially since that meant opposing her friends.

When reading the previous books in this series, I always got the impression that Kellan was much older…but I think that’s partly b/c of what he went through and how that shaped him.  He was such a good guy down to his core, and my heart broke for the tragedy and loss in his past.  He was completely affected, and seeing him struggle when faced with Leah and the missing children’s cases just…UGH!  It killed me!  I can’t even describe what I loved about Kellan…he was steadfast, strong, compassionate, and an amazing leader.

The plot was really exciting and intriguing in this one!  I couldn’t believe all that happened, and it had me on the edge of my seat quite often.  I couldn’t wait to find out if my theories were true, and how everything was going to play out.  And I was wholeheartedly satisfied with how it did.

All in all, this one was a total success for me!  I kind of wish we’d learned more about Cricket and JJ and what happened with all of them.  Or maybe a reunion with Bobby.  But otherwise it was great!
