Blurb:

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

My Review:

Favorite Quotes:

I shove the horrible, screaming images in my head into the dark, silent place in my mind that is getting deeper and more crowded each day. One day soon, the things I stuff in there will burst out and infect the rest of me. Maybe that will be the day the daughter becomes like the mother. Until then, I am still in control.

“Why were the other angels attacking you?” “It’s impolite to ask the victim of violence what they did to be attacked.”

Blood splatters everything—the trees, the dirt, the soldiers. The dimming light has leached the color out of it, making it look like oil dripping off the branches.

“Are you really an archangel?” I whisper. He gives me a cocky grin. “Impressed?” “No,” I lie. “But I have some complaints I’d like to file about your personnel.” “Talk to middle management.”

All of these covers are FANTASTIC!

One of the best things about this book is the fact that is takes place in the SF Bay Area.  Where I grew up!  Such a wonderfully painted world.  Everything was decribed in vivid detail especially the internal struggle both Penryn and Rafe dealt with. The landmarks were a great addition to the story.  I love when the geography is real in a story.

Penryn is a heroine who I wanna be when I grow up!  She is smart, isn’t afraid to voice her opinion, even when it isn’t the popular one; and she loves her family fiercely.  And she doesn’t take crap from bullies.  She reluctantly partners with an angel, the enemy, in hopes of being reunited with her family.  What starts out as a simple bargain for both quickly changes as both their perceptions of each others race become gray instead of black and white.  And it was a beautiful thing to witness.

Raffe was fricking awesome.  He was totally an alpha angel, domineering, controlling and only looking out for number one.  TIll he got his ass handed to him and had to rely on the generosity of a teenager during the legit apocalypse.  It was great to see him taken down a peg.  But he showed humility and humbleness as well.  The growth of both of these characters was intense yet consistent.

Their dialogue was some of the best I’ve read in a long time, if you know me at all I’m a huge dialogue lover and it can really make or break a book for me.  They just had this witty, flirty chemistry in their words.  Like….verbal foreplay.  It was lovely.  I loved how there was an underlying attraction there but with everything else going on, like how they were mortal enemies, they were both to busy to really act on it.  I jumped right into the next book after this one ended.
