AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:
4.5 stars — There was so much going on in this one, and I’m still loving being back in this series. This one felt more solid than The Reluctant King, in that the writing and the progression of the romance was much smoother and realistic.
Bailey Carr’s narration is still solid for me. She conveys great emotion, solid range of voices, I’ve just ended up really enjoying her in this series. It will be interesting to see what she’ll sound like for Seraphina. As for Alex Bloch, he was pretty solid as well. Not quite as much emotion, he felt more even keel, but I guess that worked for Jericho. I was totally thrown off by his very faint accent though, as Jericho should have been just American right? I think this was Mr. Bloch’s natural accent, but I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it was — New Zealand? Australian? Just plain British? It was so faint, I really couldn’t tell, but it did vaguely distract me, but that has a lot to do with me and the kind of listener I am. His other character voices were pretty solid as well, though not quite as much range. All in all, enjoyable, but not an immediate fave.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
4.5 stars — So nice to have more Rachel Higginson imagination to read. Confession time: I was not one of the millions of girls that fangirled all over Jericho. I loved him as a character, but I was never in love with him. So I was not one of the millions waiting for his love story. Regardless, what a beautiful love story it was. And Jericho was so much more than I remembered him being. I mean, he was always sexy and funny and sweet. But this book delved deeper into how he felt about his position and the man he’d become and what he would do for the people he loved. Being confronted with a man who actually had to do the dirty and hard things to keep his world safe was harder than I expected. I felt so much for him, and never really thought about how he would handle that. It’s not something that we think about much, even in the real world. I thought Ms. Higginson did a fabulous job of really showcasing a *warrior*.
Now onto the fangirliness. I never had desires or expectations for Jericho’s inevitable soulmate, but Olivia was spot on. She was hilarious, feisty, a bit damaged, both beautifully strong and vulnerable at the same time. And I loved how down to earth she was!! I’ve never been much of a fashion/makeup girl, so I never quite cared about all of that with the other Star-Crossed heroines, so to have one that was more like me was dream come true.
And holy toledo, the steam factor….. I…I just….wow. The pool? OMG. Seriously. There are no words.
As usual, loved the action and forward motion in the Terletov storyline. I did feel like some of that got rushed at times, and that’s where this book lost the half a star. View Spoiler » So yeah. Loved it, but felt a bit short changed at the end there. Super excited to see how it all wraps up with Sebastian’s story….he was off for me in the book, so I can’t help but wonder what is going on with him.
So in conclusion, if you’ve loved the Star-Crossed series thus far, you will love this next installment. It had all the factors that make Rachel Higginson books fabulous, including (and my secret favourite part) the humour. ENJOY!!!
