Blurb:

I hate. I thought I hated before the letter, before the werewolves, but now I understand that was nothing more than a chip on my shoulder. The urbat took what was mine. And, they will pay.

Isabelle leads a very normal life...for an emotional syphon. If not for Ethan and his bar, she would have lost her sanity long ago. But everything changes with the crash of her fighting cage and a man who transforms into a wolf. There’s something about Carlos—when he’s not growling at her—that makes her do things she wouldn’t normally do, like sigh and daydream.

Attraction aside, she is faced the very real evidence that werewolves and urbat exist, and the urbat are after her. And the only way she can keep Ethan safe is to join with the werewolves and Carlos. It’s a race against time to stop a war, fight for love, and find the last Judgement.

My Review:

ON REREAD:
4.5 stars — OMG, I’m so glad I reread this book while my hubby was on a business trip, b/c even though I knew it was coming, I still uncontrollably bawled at a certain part of this book.  Gawd, this book makes me feel SO MUCH!!  I feel like it just took the whole series up a notch, and I felt so much for Isabelle, and how her power affected her and the relationships she developed.  I still want to know more about Carlos, but I think I remembered not getting answers from my first readthrough, so it didn’t affect me as much.  It just made me more excited to finally read his book!

Otherwise, I pretty much felt the same as in my first read, I was just more absorbed and apparently decided I had more faith in the story than the first time.  Though, reading through my original review, now I really am curious if Isabelle is ever going to learn Carlos’ secrets.  I guess we’ll see!  But I did enjoy their connection more this time through…

Blurb:

Carlos has spent his life avoiding attachments while protecting his race. His childhood taught him that something is out there, threatening the existence of werewolves, and he will let nothing interfere with his vendetta to stop the threat.

Physical attachment and vendetta collide when he sees Isabelle. She’s meant to be his Mate, and instinct demands that he protect her above all else. However, letting go of his past is as impossible as embracing a future filled with love. Isabelle wants nothing to do with him, except fight him. Carlos must find a way through her emotional armor and hopes, together, they can heal and face the threat.

My Review:

4 stars — OK, well, I really had expectations for what I wanted from this book, and while I got a bit of that, it wasn’t enough in my opinion.

Carlos is a VERY mysterious character, and one who makes an impression from the first introduction in Michelle’s book.  Grey always hinted at loss and sadness, and his concern always made me curious what happened to make Carlos who he was.  And while we get a glimpse into the defining moment in his childhood that seemed to break him, and we find out a secret he’s keeping hidden from EVERYONE I think (though Grey knows a bit on his own, as we learned in Thomas’ book), I just wanted…MORE.  This was like all the companion books in that it really didn’t deviate from its companion’s storyline.  Which is okay, but…I guess I just didn’t quite get how he was shaped, you know?  Why is he so particular?  Is it the control he lost in his tragedy?  Or what he deals with with the link behind the wall, and it just flooded out into the rest of his life and habits?  I guess I needed to be beat over the head with explanations, b/c all I really can do is offer conjecture, and that leaves me so unsatisfied.

I did appreciate learning a bit more from his perspective with how he felt about Isabelle, his pull, the whole chasing thing (though, still a bit weird), the Ethan stuff…but it wasn’t, like, a LOT or anything.

So basically, I enjoyed myself, I was wrapped up in the emotions, and curious beyond belief about his secret, and anticipating…  And then the ending happened.  And I was like wait, what?  That’s it?

All I can say is that the way things played out in this book leaves a HEAVY burden on the last book to answer a LOT of questions.  I’m getting a bit worried that my expectations are not going to be met…  *sigh*  So yeah…

COYER Summer Hunt: Read a book with a POC as MC — 1 point.

One response to “(Dis)content & Carlos’ Peace by Melissa Haag

  1. Curly Carla

Carlos was a strong silent type of character and I don’t think I got to know him enough to really care what happens to him. I mean,I do, as far as isabelle goes, but other than that, I’m like “eh”. Which is sad because I love this series.
