My rating:
Blurb:There are three things you need to know about Ashley Winston: 1) She has six brothers and they all have beards, 2) She is a reader, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Former beauty queen, Ashley Winston’s preferred coping strategy is escapism. She escaped her Tennessee small town, loathsome father, and six brothers eight years ago. Now she escapes life daily via her Amazon kindle one-click addiction. However, when a family tragedy forces her to return home, Ashley can’t escape the notice of Drew Runous— local Game Warden, bear wrestler, philosopher, and everyone’s favorite guy. Drew’s irksome philosophizing in particular makes Ashley want to run for the skyscrapers, especially since he can’t seem to keep his exasperating opinions— or his soulful poetry, steadfast support, and delightful hands— to himself. Pretty soon the girl who wanted nothing more than the escape of the big city finds she’s lost her heart in small town Tennessee.
This is a full-length novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the fourth book in the 'Knitting in the City' series.
Listening Length: 11 hours and 52 minutes.
ON REREAD:
4 stars — I’m finally attempting to finish the Knitting in the City series this year, and have decided to do so through audiobooks. I’d already read this one, but wanted to reread to fit it into context, and also to see how it fares in audio! I found that my opinions were pretty on par with my first go round as far as the story goes: I thought the depiction of grief and the loss of a loved one was beyond compare. I ADORED the interactions of the Winston family, and the introduction of Ashley’s hillbilly brothers. The scenes where the KITC girls come together were always among my favourites. I ADORED some of the beautiful poetry from Drew. I enjoyed the romance between Ashley and Drew, but I wasn’t gaga over it. It really was all the interactions with secondary characters that put this book over the top.
As for our narrator? I enjoyed her! I LOVED how she voiced both Ashley and Drew the most. She just fit Ashley’s personality in my opinion. And OMG, every time her Drew voice said “Sugar”, I melted. I actually really enjoyed her voices for the brothers as well. Her KITC girls voices were good too, but I preferred Devra Woodward’s versions more. I found that I didn’t always feel like her voices for each character were consistent…BUT, it’s a huge cast, so I kind of get that. She EXCELLED at the levels of emotion she conveyed, and her comedic timing though. Just fantastic.
So yeah. Another solid addition to the series, and definitely a great start to the Winston spin off.
COYER Summer Hunt: Read a book with just half a face on the cover — 4 points.
