Blurb:

Axelia fought an army of vampires and survived. Once fated as the destroyer of the vampire race, she is now welcomed into the immortal empire and revered as a god.

But instead of relishing her victory, she faces a dangerous new world and an empire at war. Axelia is thrust into the position of supreme vampire and caught in the crossfire of battle. To make matters worse, her role alienates Lucas, the one vampire that she trusts.

Her choices have brutal consequences and her power spawns evil enemies. And they know how to get to her — by hurting those whom she loves most.

Bestselling author Wynne Channing's highly-anticipated sequel to What Kills Me is another heart-pounding thrill ride filled with stunning twists, tragic betrayal and bloody action.

My Review:

4 stars — Oh man, that was an epic sequel!  I’m kind of sad there probably won’t be anymore in this series, because I’m curious about a few of the things that Ms. Channing set up.  But at least I wasn’t left unsatisfied, I really appreciate that.

I will admit, I wanted to shake Zee for most of the Part One of this book.  She is soooooo naive, it’s almost unbearable.  I was questioning things left, right and center, and she’s just oblivious.  It made me want to rush her revelations, because some were SO OBVIOUS!!  It’s like, I LOVE Zee — I love her eternal optimism, her snark, her genuine care and concern for others.  But meanwhile I’m like “don’t you realize you’re in a book??  Things are never what they seem!”  That girl needs to learn a healthy dose of skepticism.

I think what made it weirder was the conclusions that Lucas came to.  I kept expecting him to share his doubts with her more, but they were both hiding their feelings and making assumptions and allowing that to cloud their communication channels.  UGH.  I mean, I get it, but seriously…

Now saying all that, I still super enjoyed myself!  These characters are pretty easy to love, even if they make choices I consider stupid.  There was this huge sense of anticipation throughout the first part, because you just knew things were going to go VERY BAD.  And wow, again, the action and suspense was just great!  Such great fight scenes and descriptions — I mean, gruesome for sure, but it really was easy to get caught up in it.

I think one of the things that I loved about this one is how we got to know and care for more secondary characters.  I ADORED San.  He was just delightful, and I loved their friendship.  I even enjoyed the bits with Brogan.  I maintain reservation about Uther…I had a hard time trusting him since I knew he supported a side filled with corruption.

And caring about all these characters made it easy for my emotions to become involved, so there was definitely some heartbreak along the way.

I think the thing that would have elevated the star rating for me is if Zee had thought about the caste system and understood the wrongness.  She never got there, and I was disappointed in that.

I loved that we got a bit more romance in this one.  Still not a lot, but definitely some good kisses.

So yeah.  I’m happy I finally found out what happens next, and I’m glad that it had a conclusion that wasn’t too up in the air.  I’m just bummed that I will probably never know where the author planned to go next.  Ah well.
