Blurb:

All’s fair in love, war, and survival...

SWAT Rear Guard Aidan O’Rourke puts his life on the line every day. But never his heart.

Until now.

Tenacious reporter Zoe Zagretti gets under his skin. She refuses to back down from anything, knows a good story, and can always find the hidden truth. After all, she’s no stranger to secrets.

She’s determined to uncover the truth about Aidan’s father’s death. To clear his dad’s name and restore the family’s honor.

Aidan knows what his father’s killer is capable of. He doesn’t want Zoe anywhere near this story. Family honor is one thing. Her getting hurt is something else entirely.

He’ll do what it takes to protect her…even risk his heart.

Zoe’s more afraid of her own secrets coming out. Could a man like Aidan love a woman whose entire life has been a lie?

None of that may matter however…if they don’t first survive the hunt.

Just 24 hours can change your life.

Book 2 of 4 in the "24 Hour Final Countdown" Series.

Previously published as Truth or Consequences.

My Review:

4 stars — It’s been a LONG time since I read this one, back when it was a Harlequin Romance Suspense, and I even think I still have it on paperback somewhere…or else I loaned it to someone.  I remember really enjoying this series, and that this one in particular was my favourite.  It definitely still entertained, but I can’t help but want to reread them all to see if it’s still my fave, or if I’ve changed enough to identify with other characters more…hmmm.

I think one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much is Zoe.  She is the epitome of sassy and feisty, strong and independent, but also vulnerable and with a heart of gold.  I loved watching her stand up for herself, even to Aidan, and fight to show her worth.  It was a strange mix with her over sense of guilt and shame and worthlessness.  She was fun, and she was real, and she kept me smiling at the craziest times.

Aidan was a pretty great book boy himself.  I mean, he doesn’t start off on the right foot with his emotions pulled back and his overzealous anger at Zoe just because of her job.  But I think that’s what makes watching her get under his skin and melt his walls that much more satisfying.  And I have to admit, watching a guy get told off by a strong female, and actually understanding her point of view and trying to change?  Hella sexy.

Obviously they had this great push and pull chemistry, *almost* enemies to lovers in a way (at least from Aidan’s perspective).  And the heightened sense of danger definitely fast forwarded their feelings, but I was fine with that.

As with so many romantic suspense books, I sometimes wonder about the reality of the situations they are in…but it wasn’t over the top unbelievable.  And I appreciated that the author included some great moments addressing domestic violence/abuse and getting help (especially with the author’s note at the end).

And while we didn’t get to spend a ton of time with secondary characters, I really loved the O’Rourke family, and rereading this one just made me want to reread them all, so I’d call it a success.
