Blurb:

The best enemies make the best lovers...

There are three things I hate:
Bratwurst in any form, my neighbors boinking like farm animals at 3 AM, and Chase Jett.

Mostly I hate Chase Jett. It's been ten years since he took my virginity—I'd make a bratwurst joke, but the unfortunate truth is that it would have to be a brat-best joke, and yes, it kills me to admit that—and now he's not only a billionaire, he's also my new boss.

Turns out our hate is mutual. And this kind of hate is horrifically twisted, filthy, and banging hot.

I just might have to hate him forever.

Mister McHottie is the hilariously sexy romantic comedy that your mother warned you about, complete with an organic happy-ever-after (or seven), a Bratwurst Wagon, ill-advised office pranks, and no cheating or cliffhangers.

My Review:

3.5 stars — Well, that was a big bag of mixed.  I wonder if this author might inevitably just not be for me.  This book reminded me a lot of Helena Hunting’s Pucked.  It’s so popular and everyone loves it, but the over the topness is just a bit too over the top for this cringey reader.  I’m also not huge on enemies to lovers, so I should have known this might not be a hit for me.

So let’s start with the enemies to lovers aspect.  Wow.  Like, lots of hate.  And hate fucking.  I get that it was sort of their thing, but I just hate meanness, so for me there was nothing sexy about it.  I almost DNF’d when we got to the elevator scene, I was that uncomfortable with the way the sex scene played out.  I pressed on because it was a buddy read, and strangely enough there were all these other things that I really liked about the book.  So it was legitimately a mixed bag for me.

While it was SUPER over the top, there were moments where it didn’t quite push over the edge and I thought it was hilarious.  Like I laughed and laughed and highlighted some areas.  But then other areas had me either just disbelieving and they were too far to be funny, or I was legitimately cringing (I seriously suffer STRONGLY of second-hand embarrassment).

On the romance front, there were moments of actual connection sprinkled in among all the sex scenes, and I actually really enjoyed those…I felt for what both of them had gone through and besides all the immaturity that came with their relationship, they both seemed like bright people.  I really enjoyed what little I learned about what Chase was trying to do with his billions.

As for each of them individually?  I don’t know.  They weren’t awful, but they’re not going to go on any “I want to be friends with them” lists.

I enjoyed Sia’s friendships with the girls in the girl band…they were a fun mix.  And even though Sia’s brothers were ridiculous and caricatures, I’m somewhat intrigued by them.  I wonder if getting in their heads would help me like them more and not just see them as cartoon characters.

So yeah.  Definitely super fun and funny parts, hence why I’m giving it a half star bump.  But I am wary about more books from this author.  I might need someone who is a fan to give me the lowdown on which books are more over the top, and which ones have more to offer than just fucking and more fucking.  The potential for heart was there, but it was background stuff.

COYER Community: I buddy read this book with Anne, who also gave this book 3.5 stars.  Read her review here.  She gave me the heads up that I should try Stud in the Stacks, as it was less crazy — so good to know!

  1. Okay, so I get what you’re saying about this book and Pippa Grant’s writing. It is over the top at times, hilarious at others. I have read most of her books now, and she’s one I know I can reach for when I need something to make me laugh. I do have my favorites that I would recommend of hers. Beauty and the Beefcake, Stud in the Stacks, and Jock Blocked are the three I gave 5 stars to.

  2. Sophia Rose

I’m iffy on enemies to lovers b/c either I completely buy in that they are good antagonists and I can’t see them together or I get irritated because I don’t see what they are fussing about as that big a deal. Oh yes, and sex scenes that get me cringing have often made me skim and get past sex scenes. Glad there were some hilarious moments and some times of good connection to balance all that out.

  3. YES I agree with everything you said. Over the top, some funny, too much fucking. I wanted to read this one because I had read and adored the second one, so I highly recommend that one Stud in the Stacks – even though this was not believable.
