The New York Times bestselling author of Life's Too Short delivers a refreshingly modern fairy tale perfect for fans of Casey McQuiston and Emily Henry.

After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable.

While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people.

Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his?

My Review:

4.5 stars — When I had 3 hours left on this audio, I thought I’d listen for an hour before bed…and suddenly it was 2am and I was finished and sniffling and happy.  😉

The narrators were absolutely fantastic in this one.  Mr. Webber can occasionally be hit or miss for me, but he was totally hit in this one.  Both of them were just absolutely fantastic with conveying emotions, as evidenced by my crying in bed.

Alexis was a complicated heroine that I both loved and was frustrated by.  I think in the end it works, especially given all of the emotional abuse she suffered, and how she had been trained in that abuse to think it was normal.  She had a HUGELY large journey in this one, and I think as someone who hasn’t suffered from abuse it could be hard to see her continue to put up barriers to her own happiness.  But it also made the moment where she finally figured it out very satisfying.  She was smart, compassionate, and despite her upbringing, very open.

Daniel was a perfect beta hero for me.  He was kind, generous, and just all sorts of adorable.  He could be a bit of an eager puppy at times, but I think that fit perfectly with Alexis.  He had some of his own growing to do, but in general this was more about Alexis’s journey than his.

They had fantastic chemistry with one another.  I loved the way they teased and flirted, and just eased into a relationship despite Alexis’s resistence.

The town felt like a character in and of itself, and there was the teeniest bit of magical realism there.  And then there were all the townsfolks!  They just made me happy with their quirky goodness, and they weren’t without their own struggles.

All in all this book just made me happy.  Sure, it also ripped out my heart, but that just showed how invested I was in an HEA…and this book delivered.
