My rating:
Blurb:I’m banished to Vermont for a scandal that wasn’t my fault, and broke because my famous father cut me off. And did I mention my roommate stole my boyfriend? Yeah, I’m loving my Moo U experience.
Now I need a job, because this gel manicure won’t upkeep itself. The only available option is the last one I’d ever want--a job as the hockey team’s equipment manager. My plan is to do the bare minimum, get paid, and find my way back into my father’s good graces.
I will not get involved with a hockey player, no matter how hot. They’re cocky. And obnoxious. I know their type, and I’m not willing to risk getting hurt again. Until Lex Vonne glides into my life looking like sin on a stick.
He thinks I’m a spoiled brat.
I think he’s using me to get ahead.
But the fire I feel when we’re together is like a slapshot to my heart…
3.75 stars — Honestly, I don’t really know why this one isn’t a full 4 stars…probably my mood. So for all intents and purposes, just consider this a 4 star review and let’s ignore Lenore’s weird need to be precise about shit.
It’s been quite a while since I read Dylan and Chastity’s book, and I think I’m okay with that. I remember Kaitlyn being a mean girl, and very entitled, and thus being wary of her own book even though I actually love when people are three dimensional. And since I can’t remember much for details, I honestly can’t tell how well this book did at not making Kaitlyn too different from what we already know, and sort of glossing over her bad behavior. It feels a little like glossing over, but I decided fuck it, I’m just going to read this as a book and not worry about if it works with canon.
All that to say that in general I liked Kaitlyn. She had some complexity to her, mostly chalked up to her acting out to catch her father’s attention. I honestly don’t feel like her snobbish tendencies really fit with who we get to know…she’s more standoffish than entitled in this book. And I appreciate that, but it doesn’t even fit with the vibe of the blurb, you know? Anyone willing to work hard as a hockey team equipment manager, who actually takes pride in her work and doesn’t complain? Well, I like that, but it’s not what I was expecting. Which I was going to let go of, and look at how well that’s going for me. *snort* Anyways, I appreciated that there was a lot going on inside her to explain how she presented herself to other people, and how she kept everyone at arm’s length. I’m not sure I always got it, but that’s just a personal disconnect thing.
Lex was actually pretty adorable. I expected something else, but I think I had him mixed up with a different character from later books in this series. He was passionate and hardworking, if a bit single-minded. But I loved his sense of humour, and how he was persistent in his pursuit of Kaitlyn without being disrespectful.
And honestly? They were pretty cute together. Unexpectedly cute if I’m being honest. Something about them felt different and refreshing. Like more real, they were attracted, they connected, but it wasn’t overly flowery or anything…just, like, you know…a college couple.
So yeah, the story was solid and the connection between our MCs was fantastic. I think what’s preventing me from going full 4 stars is just that the explanations around Kaitlyn’s past behavior didn’t always work for me.
Haha! I’ll take the 4 stars since I love this author and enjoyed this book. I hope your mood improves!
