Blurb:

Can dreams ever truly die?

Garrett's dreams could have ended with the loss of his leg.

Yet he's behind the bar, working towards his own restaurant—and someone to share his life with.

Lilah forgot how to dream.

Her abusive boyfriend trapped her in a life without a future. Until a chance meeting with Garrett stirs a longing for more.

But their timing sucks, and when Lilah winds up broken and alone a few days after Valentine's Day, she has to reclaim her dreams on her own.

You'll love this touching tale of love after abuse.

My Review:

I really liked this book.  It was better than the first one, which I enjoyed a lot as well. This story was way more emtionally intense due to the domestic abuse.  I suppose I should warn folks with triggers here.  It gets pretty graphic.  I was surprised how much I connected with these characters because the story is pretty short.  I don’t know how the author was able to give us such a detailed background for both the MC’s without losing the pace.  I love when an author can do this.

Garrett is the ultimate beta/alpha guy. (If that makes sense) He is a combat veteran with a prosthetic leg, so you know he has overcome obstacles in his life.  He wants to help Lilah when he sees the signs of her being abused.  And he isn’t pushy about it; he let’s Lilah set the pace. Wanting to help her graduated into attraction, but Garrett knows that the timing is wrong and selflessly puts his emotions on the back burner in order to help her.  Ugh, he is the sweetest.  I just love him.  He strongly encourages her to leave her abuser even if it means he will not be able to pursue her romantically.  And even when she repeatedly goes back to him.  I would be so frustrated if it was me.

Now Lilah isn’t stupid.  She is aware of her precarious situation.  An battered woman is a strong woman.  I can’t even imagine having to deal with that kind of fear and pain relentlessy and yet still think they are redeemable people.  Her heart was just too big.  It doesn’t make her weak or deserving of what happens to her.  But man, her internal struggle was hard to read.  She felt so worthless and undeserving of love.  Even while she knew the relationship was unhealthy.

The end was just so emotional for me.  I was happy and sad at the same time. I can’t really say more without spoiling it for you.  You should just go read it.

Kudos to this author for making me feel so deeply in only 162 pages, it is no easy feat.

  1. Oh, domestic abuse. That’s so hard to read — especially when it’s graphic. Other than that, this book does sound good. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I am curious about the happy and sad ending.
