Blurb:

You think it's safe to walk alone at night. It's not.

You think the only threat is other humans. It's not.

Monsters are real. Demons are real. Vampires are real.

And I'm about to become one of them.

My name is Arianna Spero. I was an ordinary girl, living an ordinary life, until my mother lapsed into a coma. Now, I am her only hope. She made a deal with the devil, and on my 18th birthday he came to collect. But there's a way to save her. There's something the princes of hell want more than my mother.

Me.

So I signed my soul away and promised to pick a prince to marry. I would take the blood oath, become one of them, and give them an heir. I would become a princess of hell, and my mother would live.

I expected fire and brimstone. I expected pain and misery. I didn't expect beauty. I didn't expect magic.

I didn't expect love.

But the princes are keeping secrets from me.

Secrets that could shatter everything.

My Review:

4 stars — I love me a sassy/snarky heroine.  Seriously, it’s a weakness.  And Arianna gave me that and more.

She was the usual “chosen one” type of girl — lots of sass, strong-willed, and looks like a saint because she shows a little bit of care and respect.  It’s kind of cliché, but in the end I don’t mind because she pulls it off.  She also surprised me in different ways.  I loved how she dived right into the new world and decided she was going to do everything in her power to learn about it, to effect change, and work hard for what she saw as right.  Her work ethic seriously impressed me.  She’s definitely a heroine that I want to follow on her journey.

As for the rest of the characters?  Definitely a mix.  I loved Baron and how he became attached to Ari.  Similarly loved Daison for the same reasons.  He was so adorable and sweet.  Loved the semi-friendships Ari formed with Kayla and even Kal to a degree, though mostly Kayla.

Then there are the seven princes.  I don’t know what to think there.  Honestly, I had a hard time investing in any romance.  I couldn’t shake this feeling that things weren’t as they seemed, or that I was going to be disappointed with the way things progressed.  Which is not to say that I don’t want to fall in love with a certain prince (trying not to spoil), but…I don’t know.  Like I said, wary.  I’m trying to remain reserved in my feelings until at least the next book.

As for the story?  Honestly, there were parts of this book that were full 5 stars and very gripping (including the beginning), but there were also pieces missing that aggravated me.  I feel like it got bogged down in details at certain times, particularly in the world building in the middle, and I would have preferred more time watching Ari and Fen work together.  It was when we got to his realm that I was sucked right back in til the very end.  And dude, there were lots of twists and turns along the way, and I definitely didn’t see the end coming!

On a sidenote, am I the only one that feels like the references to vampires and hell in the title and blurb are a bit misleading?  There was really nothing very hell-like about where we went.  It was just a different world, ruled by some corrupt people, but not like any hell I’ve ever known.

Regardless, I am super intrigued by where the story’s going, and now have to decide whether to binge the series or move on to something different and come back to it.  *sigh*  #bookwormproblems

COYER Summer Hunt: Read a book featuring an animal prominently in the story (Baron the wolf) — 4 points.

I left and came back to it. This is what I call a lazy read for me, because I can read a chapter here and there in between reading other books as well.

I did end up reading something else, just because I have all these self-imposed deadlines. *snort*

  2. Vampire books are totally not my thing, but this one does sound good! I like that it wasn’t very hell filled and more world based. I’m glad it was a good read for you.
