Blurb:

The moment everything changed didn’t happen in that cliché rockets-red-glare kind of way, it happened in the form of a waking nightmare. I caught my husband, my high-school sweetheart, the father of my children, balls deep in a sordid affair.
That was when I gave up on men and love.
I didn’t count on the NHL’s golden boy, the beautiful, arrogant Cooper Stone turning my life and my hockey rink upside down.

My kids are why I wake up in the morning.

Hockey is what Cooper breathes for.

We’re from different worlds and places in our lives but when our hearts collided something so wrong and different turned into something so right.

My Review:

2 stars — Well…hmmm…so this was not a match for me for a host of reasons.  And I probably should have DNF’d it, but after the prologue, I kind of wanted to see where it was going, and if my problems would persist.  Some have to do with the writing style, but most have to do with the characters and some toxic elements that I’m just not down for anymore (if I ever was).

First, the writing.  It was…clunky.  Or not smooth.  Or the pacing of the sentences…  Honestly I don’t know how to describe it, but it definitely felt like something that could be greatly improved.  I mean, I got bored of the sex scenes.  For me, the steamy scenes are there to enhance the romance plot, which is why I can get affected by just a kiss — it’s about the emotions.  And those were lacking in the steamy scenes.  Both characters had a penchant for dirty talk, but it wasn’t the sexy kind (at least for me, no judgements if it works for others), it was just a lot of repetition.  I honestly skimmed the sex scenes, because I knew I wasn’t going to miss anything important.  *shrugs*

Related to writing, the author also used the wrong words in a lot of instances…sometimes I would get why and would give a pass, but other times just baffled me.  Could definitely stand for a better proof/copy/line edit.

My main issue was with Parker and Cooper.  Parker was kind of mean…and I think I was dibs out on her in the first chapter when she said “I walked in quietly and found my husband pounding away at his fat ass assistant.  I’m not even saying that because I’m bitter, it’s actually true.  Where I have big knockers, she has a big. Fat. Ass.  Who knew I should have eaten more Big Macs to make him happy.”  Uh no.  This is not ever going to be a woman I like and respect.  I get being bitter, but she’s 1) fat shaming; and 2) focusing on the other woman in her rage/bitterness.  Not that she didn’t rage at her ex, but throughout the story she was disrespectful and rude about his new girl, constantly making snipey comments that are just so not cool anymore.  She also makes disparaging remarks about Cooper’s ex in the heat of the moment (calling her a Barbie, implying she has no brains, etc).  I don’t watch those real housewives reality shows because I’m just not into watching women tear other women down for entertainment.  For me, Parker didn’t have a whole lot else going for her.  I mean, I appreciated her work ethic (though we only saw that in the beginning), and I liked how she was with her children for the most part.  But other than that?  She sniped about everything.  *shrugs*

And then we have Cooper.  *sigh*  OK, I’m not an alpha girl.  But I’m particularly not into possessive dickheads, and that’s what Cooper was.  Honestly, the way he was with Parker was concerning at moments.  While it was just a turnoff the way he would pee on her leg (and even though she called him on it, that behavior didn’t change), I was also not a fan of how many times he got genuinely angry with her, and not in a teasing way.  I mean, he got PISSED at her for not telling him about her birthday.  Overreaction much?  AND then there were the gagillion times that he would get mad at what she was wearing and tell her to go change.  Thankfully it didn’t seem to be about tempting other men, but more about him not being able to control himself.  And if it had been lighthearted and teasing, that’s one thing.  But he was fucking serious!  WHAT?  And occasionally she listened!!?  What????  No.  He had a glimmer of good at the end when we got to see how much he loved having a family, and being a part of Parker’s…he was definitely great with Alison and Matthew.  But he’s just never going to be my kind of hero.

And as an aside, if you’re nitpicky about hockey stuff, the author’s not too bad…but there were definitely mistakes.  For most readers that’s obviously not going to be a problem, but I’m not most readers.  *rolls eyes at self*

So yeah.  Sorry for the crappy review, I just figure if other people have the same turn offs, then they could be warned.  Meanwhile other folks might discover this is in their wheelhouse!  *shrugs*  No judgement.
