Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Holly Black, this enemies-to-lovers adventure romance should come with a book hangover warning.
All magic has a price.
Haven survived the Devourers, but she isn’t any closer to breaking the curse. Meanwhile, her forbidden magic rages brighter and more dangerous every day.
To control her powers and stand a chance against the Shade Queen, Haven made a bargain with two enemy immortals. Now her waking hours are spent fighting alongside the Sun Lord, but her dreams belong to the Shade Lord.
Only the closer she ventures into the wicked Shadow Kingdom the more her magic shows itself—and the more she struggles with whom to trust. The golden but wounded Sun Lord or the darkly charismatic Shade Lord.
Both are off-limits.
And both have the ability to save her . . . or destroy her.
With the Shade Queen closing in and Bell’s time nearly up, Haven will sacrifice everything to break the curse—but will it be enough to stop the mortal realm from falling into darkness forever?
Welcome to the Kingdom of Runes where immortals and humans clash, light and dark magic reign, and mythical creatures lurk in the shadows. If you like fierce heroines, enemies-to-lovers romance, wild plot twists, and endearing characters that stay with you long after you reach the end, you need to discover the book readers are calling dark fantasy at its best. Just make sure to clear out some space on your calendar first!
**Curse Breaker was previously published in the boxed set Shattered Worlds. This is a revised second edition. The Kingdom of Runes series is upper/mature YA and contains mild cursing and adult situations, including romance.**

My Review:

Favorite Quotes:

“Why are you ashamed of your body?” His soft voice caressed her bones. “I’m not,” she said, and it was true. She loved the hardness of her thighs, the tautness of her belly, the powerful clench of muscles in her back when she drew back her bowstring. “But in my culture, a female’s body is . . .” What? She couldn’t remember the words ever being said, just that it was implied. A woman’s body was shameful. Something to be both ogled and denigrated. Something to hide along with her hair, a possession that could be stolen if she wasn’t careful, taken without her consent.

“Lay down, my darling, and rest your weary head. Your battle is over, your journey is at an end. Your Golden Shores are calling; your ancestors are near. Go now, Princess, claim your forever throne, and then wait for me until I’m called home.”

There was no turning back, their fates were written. All she could do was try to make up for it somehow. They wouldn’t return to Penryth the same—but they would return. Sometimes, that was all you could ask for. Another chance.

This one really picked up from the last one.  I have always found the second book in a series to be my favorite.  We are past the origin/background story and well into the journey part.  Which is the most fun for me in these kinds of stories.

The romance in this was a super slow burn and a quasi-love triangle.  The Shade Lord clearly feels some type of way about Haven but it’s ambiguous at best.  The Sun Lord takes his sweet time coming to grips with how he truly feels about her.  Her journey to save Prince Bell is one of my favorite things about this story, even beyond the romance, which was really good too.

It is said that there are only seven plot types.  And no matter how hard I look for more, I can’t find more than that. Often I find they might even blur the lines a bit.  This one is most similar to a Questing plot or a Journey and Return plot, which are my favorites when reading a young adult fantasy book.  Haven goes through an amazing journey riddled with obstacles but with her companions help is able to overcome them and retrieve the important article (prince bell) and take it back ot her homeland.  I can’t really go into more detail (It would take too long) suffice it to say that this world was rife with betrayal, romance, action and fantastic world building.  I am very intrigued to read the rest of the series.
