Lenoreo’s Non-Yearly Reading Challenges

I’ve found that the shorter term Reading Challenges and Read-a-thons that I participate in were getting lost in my yearly Reading Challenge page, so I’ve created this page to track them separately here!  I will post the most recent Reading Challenges/Read-a-thons at the top!  For more information on any of the challenges, go to the sign up pages.

The Can You Read a Series in a Month? Challenge is hosted by Berls & Michelle @Because Reading is better than real life and runs from September 1st to 30th. #SeriesinaMonth

The goal is to pick just one series, and read all the core books in that month (novellas optional). There are a few stipulations:

  1. The series must be at minimum a duology (though if it’s a duology, no rereads).
  2. If you’ve already started the series, then you must read at least 3 books in the month (so if it’s a 4 book series, and you’ve read 3 of the books, then you must reread at least two of those plus the remaining book).
  3. The series does not have to be complete, but again, there must be at least 3 books published.
  4. If the series is <5 books, then each book must be >250 pages each.  If you will be reading 5 or more books, they can be >70 pages each, but no rereads.

I’m buddy reading with Brandee from (Un)conventional Bookworms!  This time we’re picking the Hoops series by Kennedy Ryan, which has 3 books (and 1 optional novella).

Since Devney Perry is coming out with super pretty special edition hardbacks of her Lark Cove series in a Kickstarter campaign (that ends June 15th), I figured now is the time to read that series!  There are 4 books out (1 coming next year), and I will be buddy reading the series with Brandee from (Un)conventional Bookworms!

  2. Timid by Devney Perry

I decided to pick from my Down the TBR Hole survivors (to help with one of my resolutions for #BookishRes2022), and with the help of my hubby I have picked The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater, mostly because I have the box set of the 3 main novels.  There is a novella as well, and since it’s at my library, I will likely try to read it as well.

*record scratch*

Soooo….I read the first book in my previously chosen series, and honestly wasn’t that compelled to continue.  So I’m switching my series choice to the Destiny series by Beverly Jenkins.  Luckily this will also count for my Diversity challenge March theme of #ownvoices!

Books Read:

  1. Destiny's Embrace by Beverly Jenkins

I have a lot of ARCs due in March, so I knew I had to be careful about which series I chose (because there are SO MANY to choose from).  I decided to pick Lauren Layne’s 21 Wall Street series because I got ALL 3 books in the trilogy from NetGalley and haven’t read a single one.  So it will help my #NGEW2021 challenge big time.  Also, the audiobooks are available at my library, so theoretically I could listen to them whilst reading my other ARCs.

9-11 Mrs. Claus Status
12+ Santa Status

I’m going to be conservative and shoot for Reindeer Status, because there are always unexpected interruptions at Christmastime, but secretly I’m hoping I’ll hit Mrs. Claus Status.

  1. The series must be at minimum a trilogy.
  2. If you’ve already started the series, then you must read at least 3 books in the month (so if it’s a 5 book series, and you’ve read 3 of the books, then you must reread at least one of those plus the remaining 2 books).
  3. The series does not have to be complete, but again, there must be at least 3 books published.

I had a hard time choosing between a few series I REALLY want to finally finish, but haven’t read for 6+ years!  So I polled the COYER group, and I guess I’m reading the War of Princes series by A.R. Ivanovich!!  This is a 4 book series, of which I’ve read the first 2 books.  But since it’s been so long since I read them, I’m going to be starting again from the beginning.

Books Read:

  1. Haven by A.R. Ivanovich
  2. Paperglass by A.R. Ivanovich

COYER stands for Clean Out Your E-Reads, and the original purpose of the challenge was to read all those books you already own that you purchased for less than $5 (this includes ARCs since you get those for free).  There used to be 2 COYERs a year, a winter one and a summer one. There will now be COYER ALL YEAR LONG! For the linky and giveaway, they must follow the basic rules:

  1. Read Your E-Reads! Every book you read MUST be in an electronic format – meaning E-Book or Audiobook. It’s okay to start a book before March 23rd, but you must be less than half way for it to count then review it during COYER.
  2. The books must be FREE or NEARLY FREE! This includes review books, tour books, NetGalley, Edelweiss, etc. What’s nearly free? No more than $2 for eBooks and no more than $5 for Audiobooks (or the equivalent in your currency). This does NOT include library books, borrowed books, or Kindle Unlimited books.
  3. Review and Link Reviews! Your review may be on your blog, Goodreads, Shelfari, Booklikes, etc. Link the review to the Review Linky (which we will have as an announcement at the top of the blog).

Throughout the year there will be “events”, and the first is…

Quarantine Edition:

The theme is: feeling good! Through our community and the books we read, we’re going to help each other feel good. Since we are quite literally throwing this together in an afternoon, it’s not fully planned and will grow and change as the year progresses.  You can read any book, any format, if it meets the following criteria:

  • Is part of a readathon we’re doing. We aren’t planning them in advance this time. Follow us in our facebook group for details as we start new ones.
  • Is a buddy read. That’s right, buddy reading is back. Read a book with a COYER participant and chat with them about it. Unlimited number of reads with a buddy (no restriction this time), as long as you tell us their rating in your review.
  • Is a COYER book club read. In our FB live today we decided to do a monthly book club. So join us in the group for details. Whatever book we read for book club will count.

My goal for #COYER Quarantine Edition is to read 25 regular COYER books.  I have no goal otherwise, just to try to participate and have fun as always!  I will only officially count regular COYER books, but I’ll list any quarantine books (RAT books, buddy reads, book club) below.

The #COYER Winter with Friends is hosted by Berls (of Fantasy is More Fun), Michelle (of Because Reading is better than real life), and Stephanie (of  Once Upon a Chapter) and runs from December 1st to March 7th. #COYER

COYER stands for Clean Out Your E-Reads, and the original purpose of the challenge was to read all those books you already own that you purchased for less than $5 (this includes ARCs since you get those for free).  The basic rules are as follows:

  1. Read Your E-Reads! Every book you read MUST be in an electronic format – meaning E-Book or Audiobook. It’s okay to start a book before December 1st, you must be less than half way for it to count then review it during COYER.
  3. Make a book recommendation on your sign-up post! This is new, but super easy. When you write your sign up post, recommend 1 book that you think everyone should read. It doesn’t matter if it’s recent or decades old. Genre, length, format… none of it matters.

There is an optional twist, and you can participate in all, none, or just a few of the elements.

COYER with Friends:

To encourage the social aspect of reading/blogging, there are a few ways to get extra points this COYER (in a separate Rafflecopter):

  • Buddy Reading
    1. Pick a COYER participant to buddy read a book with. This means you read it at the same time and talk about it. You can read as many books at the same time as you’d like, but you can only read 2 books per buddy.
    2. There are NO price or format requirements for books you buddy read.
    3. Review the books! In the review, list your buddy with their number on the sign-up linky and the rating they gave the book.
  • Recommended Reading – Read a book that was recommended on someone’s sign-up post. It’s okay if these books don’t meet the Winter COYER requirements.
  • Read-a-thons – We will have four read-a-thons this time. To participate in a read-a-thon:
    1. Be sure to announce your participation in the Facebook post for that read-a-thon (up the day before the read-a-thon begins)
    2. Read at least one qualifying book
    3. Report your results in the Facebook post for that readathon (up the day the read-a-thon ends)

So mark your calendars to participate in as many or as few read-a-thons as you’d like. All Read-a-thons books are exempt from COYER rules. Read whatever format or price you’d like 😉

    • FFS, I suffer from FOMO! This read-a-thon (FFS= For F*cks Sake & FOMO= Fear of Missing Out) is about reading those books you wanted to read this year but didn’t get around to and runs December 15th – 28th
    • Honoring Lost Friends. This read-a-thon is in honor of Tiffany and Grace, good blogging friends lost this year to cancer. In honor of them, pick a book from their TBR or Read Shelves on Goodreads (Tiffany’s book list & Grace’s book listJanuary 5th – January 11th.
    • Buddy Read. Maybe you’re not feeling up to the challenge of doing lots of Buddy Read books, but you want to get in on the fun for a bit. Join us January 19th – February 8th to buddy read a book or two.
    • Read Their Book! Read a book from a COYER Participant’s (aka a friend’s!) to-be-read shelf February 16th – February 27th.

My goal for #COYER with Friends is to read 25 COYER books and participate in at least 1 read-a-thon.  I likely won’t do the Buddy Reading, but I might try the Recommended Reading.

There are no levels to this readathon, you just set your reading goal and list the books you hope to read.  All books must be either holiday or winter themed.  Since I always inevitably have ARCs or Betas get in the way, I’m going to be conservative and set a goal of 5 Christmas/Winter books from the following list (you could also create a Goodreads shelf):

The Can You Read a Series in a Month? Challenge is hosted by Berls & Michelle @Because Reading is better than real life and runs from November 1st to 30th. #SeriesinaMonth

The goal is to pick just one series, and read all the core books in that month (novellas optional). There are a few stipulations:

I’m trying again, and this time I’m choosing to finally read the #Lovestruck series by Sariah Wilson, because a) I got them on NetGalley and am at least a year behind; b) Ms. Wilson will be at Book Bonanza next year. This is a 3 book series, so it’s perfect.

Books Read:

  1. #Starstruck by Sariah Wilson
  2. #Moonstruck by Sariah Wilson
  3. #Awestruck by Sariah Wilson

The #COYER Summer Hunt is hosted by Berls (of Fantasy is More Fun) and Michelle (of Because Reading is better than real life) @ CoyerChallenge.com and runs from June 1st to August 31st. #COYER

COYER stands for Clean Out Your E-Reads, and the original purpose of the challenge was to read all those books you already own that you purchased for less than $5 (this includes ARCs since you get those for free).  However, the summer challenges have been more about anything goes!!  Any format, any price, obtained from any LEGAL location. Library? Yep! Borrowed? Yep! KU? Yep? $500? Yep (but are you crazy?).  So that’s the basics for #COYER Summer Hunt.  BUT!  There is an optional component!!

Treasure Hunt:

We’re going on a Treasure Hunt this summer! Use this old map that Cora Coyer found to navigate your way through the summer to the treasure at the X. There’s a variety of ways to move forward a space on the map on this treasure hunt list. You’ll get the list on the kick-off post June 1st.

This map has 65 spaces from the start at “COYER Summer Hunt” to the X with the treasure. As the list will reveal, you can move forward 1 – 5 spaces with every book you read. You’ll use the list to navigate the map towards the treasure. Participating in Read-a-thons will help catapult your forward towards the treasure at the magical x. Making progress, but not quite getting to the treasure will still earn you points!

There are 5 levels to the challenge:
1-15 steps Shipwrecked!
16-30 steps Shark Attack!
31-45 steps Lost at Sea!
46-64 steps Captured by the Kraken!
65 steps X Marks the Spot!

My goal for #COYER Summer Hunt is to read 30 books and participate in at least 2 read-a-thons (see the sign up post for the RAT deetz).  Since I don’t know all of the ways I can earn points yet, I’m going to be conservative and shoot for Lost at Sea!

I am participating in the Deserted Island Read-a-thon, so here is my list of books:

The Can You Read a Series in a Month? Challenge is hosted by Berls & Michelle @Because Reading is better than real life and runs from May 1st to May 31st. #SeriesinaMonth

The goal is to pick just one series, and read all the core books in that month (novellas optional). There are a few stipulations:

I’m choosing to finally complete the Going Down in Flames series by Chris Cannon. This is a 5 book series, and I have read the first 3, so I will be rereading book 3, Trial By Fire, and then reading books 4 & 5. Since I’ve already written my review for Trial By Fire, it’ll only show on Goodreads if I’ve read it in May.

Books Read:

  1. Fanning the Flames by Chris Cannon
  2. Burning Bright by Chris Cannon

The #COYER Winter 2018 is hosted by Berls (of Fantasy is More Fun) and Michelle (of Because Reading is better than real life) @ CoyerChallenge.com and runs from December 1st to March 2nd. #COYER

COYER stands for Clean Out Your E-Reads, and the original purpose of the challenge was to read all those books you already own that you purchased for less than $5 (this includes ARCs since you get those for free).  For the Winter 2018 version they’re keeping it fairly simple:

  1. Read Your E-Reads! Every book you read MUST be in an electronic format – meaning E-Book or Audiobook. It’s okay to start a book before December 1st, you must be less than half way for it to count then review it during COYER.
  3. Read-a-thons are exceptions! We will have a few read-a-thons this COYER, where we go to summer rules… as in anything goes. Price and format won’t matter during those read-a-thons. We’ll have the exact dates for the read-a-thons on the Kick off Post December 1st.

My goal for #COYER Winter 2018 is to read 30 books and participate in at least 1 read-a-thon.

9-11 Mrs. Claus Status
12+ Santa Status

I’m going to be conservative and shoot for Reindeer Status, because there are always unexpected interruptions at Christmastime, but secretly I’m hoping I’ll hit Mrs. Claus Status.

The #COYER Big Summer Birthday Bash is hosted by Berls (of Fantasy is More Fun) and Michelle (of Because Reading is better than real life) @ CoyerChallenge.com and runs from June 9th to August 31st.

So that’s the basics for #COYER Big Summer Birthday Bash.  BUT!  In addition to that, the ladies have offered 10 goodies celebrating the past 10 COYER’s that you may choose to participate in as well!  You can participate in as many or as few as you would like.  You could just choose to do the basic challenge and not add on any goodies, it’s all up to the participant.

My goal for #COYER Big Summer Birthday Bash is to read 30 books.  And I will be participating in the following goodies:

Goody #1: Declare Your Reading Goal

  • Lightly Clean – 1 to 10 books
  • Spring Clean – 11 to 20 books
  • Deep Clean – More than 20 books

I’m going for a Deep Clean baby!!!  ACHIEVED!!

Goody #3: Participate in 1 or more Read-a-thons

  1. Fairy Tales with a Twist: Read fairy tale re-tellings and give those childhood favorites a twist! Read-a-thon runs Sunday June 17th 12am EST to Saturday June 23rd 11:59pm EST
  2. Christmas in July!: Read Holiday themed books. Read-a-thon runs Sunday July 15th 12am EST to Saturday July 21st 11:59pm EST
  3. Dusting Off The Shelves: Read the oldest books in your physical or e-library. They have to have sat on your shelf for at least 1 year. Read-a-thon runs Sunday July 29th 12am EST to Saturday August 4th 11:59pm EST
    • (mild) SUCCESS!!!  Read Over the Rainbow (DNF’d though), which has been on my shelf for 5 years, and Style, which has been on my shelf for 1.5 years.
  4. Scary Stories by the Campfire!:Read about ghosts, goblins, and any other horror/thriller that would make for a scary campfire tale!Read-a-thon runs Sunday August 5th 12am EST to Saturday August 11th 11:59pm EST
  5. Short and Sweet! Fill your final days not with Novels but with Novellas! Read-a-thon runs Sunday August 26th 12am EST to Friday August 31st 11:59pm EST
    • (mild) SUCCESS!!!  Read two novellas from my Realms & Rebels anthology, though did not post the review on the blog.  See them in this Goodreads review.

Because of reading towards Book Bonanza, and holidays sprinkled throughout, I’m only committing to participating in one read-a-thon, and most likely the Scary Stories by the Campfire! read-a-thon — I’m hoping some of my paranormal books can fit this bill as well.  If I can fit in Short and Sweet as well, bonus!

Goody #5: Mini Scavenger Hunt

The mini-scavenger hunt runs from Sunday August 12th 12am EST to Saturday August 25th 11:59pm EST, and the goal is to check off as many items as possible during that time from this list.  My goal is to check off 6 items.  FAILED on the goal, but SUCCESS on participating!

  • #74: Read the last book in a series: Boy Toy (Man Hands #3) by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby
  • #31: Read a book by an author you’ve previously read and given 5 stars: Trick Play (Mavericks Tackle Love #3) by Max Monroe
  • #59: Read a book by an author you have previously read and given less than 3 stars: Catching Irish (The Summerhaven Trio #4) by Katy Regnery
  • #43: Read a book that takes place during the summer: Dire Straits (Aspen Falls #4) by Melissa Pearl & Anna Cruise
  • #7: Read a book with a man on the cover (and no other people): Desperate Measures (Aspen Falls #5) by Melissa Pearl & Anna Cruise

Goody #8: Hurricane Berls

Hurricane Berls is hitting landfall Wednesday July 25th – Saturday July 28th!  It’s essentially a read-a-thon where you get a point per book you read, but you can ONLY read eBooks, they must have been purchased for $1 or less (not borrowed, but ARCs are ok), and in your possession before June 9th (even though this hurricane doesn’t start until July 25th)!  My goal is to read 2 books.  FAILED!!  I only read like 3/4 of a book (Seduction on the Slopes).  I underestimated how burned out I’d be post Book Bonanza.

Lenoreo's COYER Big Summer Birthday Bash 2018: 31/30

103

Status: COMPLETE!  A mix of successes and failures for the Goodies, but achieved my goal of 30 books!

The #COYER Winter Switch is hosted by Berls @ Fantasy is More Fun, Michelle @ Because Reading is better than real life, and Stormi @ Books, Movies, Reviews. Oh my! and runs from December 16th to March 9th. #COYER

COYER stands for Clean Out Your E-Reads, and the purpose is to read all those books you already own that you purchased for less than $5 (this includes ARCs since you get those for free).  Or at least that’s the regular version.  These run twice a year I believe, and for this Winter Switch you can choose the regular “strict” version for the whole challenge, or you can choose to mix it up with COYER Switch.  If you choose COYER Switch, there are 3 different time periods, and you must do each of the 3 components once (you decide the order).  NOTE: you can read books outside these rules, but obviously those books wouldn’t count towards this challenge.  I’m a bit late signing up and getting started, but what the heck!!  I’m going for the COYER Switch because it sounds fun.  Here are the deetz for the 3 components:

The Strict

This is good old strict COYER. The rules:

  1. Every book you read must be an eBook or audiobook.
  2. Every book must be either free or less than $5.
  3. No library books, borrowed books, or Kindle Unlimited.

The List

For The List, you guessed it… you’re making a list!

  1. Make a list of up to 30 books you want to read.
  2. Every book on the list must be in your possession BEFORE you put them on the list.
  3. You can add 5 new books for every 5 books you read.
  4. Books on the list can be any format, any price, obtained any LEGAL way… so that means library books, KU, borrowed, etc.

The One with the Twist

The One with the Twist is probably my favorite…

  1. You can read ANY book. ANY price. Obtained any LEGAL way.
  2. The Twist is, you have to stick with one format. If you choose audiobooks, then only the audiobooks you read during this phase will count. If you choose eBooks, then only eBooks you read during this phase will count. ETC…

My Goals:

  • December 16 – January 12: The Strict ⇒ Goal of 10 books.
  • January 13 – February 9: The List ⇒ Goal of 12 books chosen from the following list:

Anatomy of a Player by Cindi Madsen
